Carbohydrate & Glycemic Limited

ACANA LIMITS CARBOHYDRATES TO 30% & GLYCEMIC LOAD TO 9

While carbohydrates are recognized as a leading cause of obesity and diabetes, conventional dog and cat foods often exceed 50% carbohydrates.

Even worse, most dog and cat foods feature fast carbohydrates, such as rice, potato, tapioca and starches that digest quickly and can cause blood glucose to spike and fat storage to increase — factors associated with obesity and diabetes.

Free of grains, potato, tapioca and starch ingredients, Biologically Appropriate™ ACANA features low-glycemic fruits and vegetables, such as whole pumpkin and butternut squash that enter the blood stream slowly, promoting stable blood sugar levels and reducing the potential for fat storage.

COUNTING CARBOHYDRATES | GLYCEMIC LOAD

Glycemic Load (GL) is determined by multiplying the glycemic index value (GI) of the carbohydrate by the amount of carbohydrate in the food, providing the most accurate measure of how food affects the blood sugar levels of dogs and cats.

Glycemic Load = (Glycemic Index × Grams of Carbohydrate) ÷ 100.

A Glycemic Load over 20 is considered high, 11-19 is medium, and 10 or less is considered low. All ACANA foods are GL 10 or less, helping to promote lean muscle mass while supporting reduced body fat.
